BT Home Hub 5 review: BTs fastest wireless router

For a wired connection, connect an Ethernet cable from your device to one of the yellow LAN ports . Although wired connections can be faster than wireless, they’re not always convenient so choose the option that best suits your needs. You’ll find your wireless key and wireless SSID number on a plastic card which is slotted into the back of the router. This is displayed on a sticker underneath the Home Hub too. Alternatively, a 'migrate' script is also available where no original nanddump is available - use earlier 'LEDE install image' v0.1 where the 'migrate' script has been tested.

You could well have one of these still if you signed up with broadband deals from BT a while ago. Four GigE ports so customers can further exploit the superfast speeds of their Infinity Broadband. One complaint we do have is BT by default sets up the Home Hub 5 with a single SSID.

We also expect our journalists to follow clear ethical standards in their work. Our staff members must strive for honesty and accuracy in everything they do. We follow the IPSO Editors’ code of practice to underpin these standards. In addition the Home Hub 5 also makes the leap to 802.11ac wireless.

Models and technical specifications

Since hardware version 5 of the Home Hub was released in August 2013 it includes its own VDSL2 modem for Fibre-optic connections. Prior to release of the Home Hub (2004–2005), BT offered a product based on the 2Wire 1800HG, and manufactured by 2Wire. This was described as the "BT Wireless Hub 1800HG", or in some documentation as the "BT Wireless Home Hub 1800".

The middleware was developed by Jungo, a subsidiary of NDS, and is based on their openRGTM product. Come to think of it this is exactly why I don't have a BT router. Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Below we've broken down each BT router so you can figure out which one you have and what the benefits of each one are.

Installation

The security of the BT Home Hub has been questioned by GNUCITIZEN. In October 2007, Adrian Pastor warned the security and BT Broadband community regarding critical vulnerabilities he discovered in the Home Hub. The details of such research were released later in November 2007 and demonstrated how to fully compromise on the BT Home Hub by tricking a BT Home Hub user to visit a webpage crafted by the attacker. There are two versions of the BT Home Hub 2.0, the A and the B model. The hardware contained within the Home Hub 2.0A was manufactured by Thomson SpeedTouch, who had bought out Inventel and all their hardware and software rights.

In essence, while this won't be an upgrade many need, those who really care about good internet will be looking to make the upgrade. The BT dual-band ac wireless USB dongle for Windows PCs greatly improves the Wi-Fi performance of your laptop when used with the BT Home Hub 5. The easy to install dual-band dongle is compatible with Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 only. In May 2017, it was reported that many BT Smart Hub customers were suffering problems with the router constantly rebooting and being unable to maintain a reliable internet connection. Apart from a few minor niggles we were very impressed by the BT Home Hub 5. It crams in just about everything you need to connect both wired and wireless devices to the internet and does so with a great deal of aplomb.

I recommend keeping several versions around and symlinking them, so you can easily swap versions. For this to work, you need to remove the L9 component from the back of the USB port. This will break the connection from the USB + terminal and let you provide another power source. Once you have removed the above component, proceed to connect your circuit with the router. Choose a safe spot for the circuit to stay, possibly cover its base with some hot glue.

Unlike TalkTalk’s Super Router, which also delivers 802.11ac, BT’s router can hold its head high. Despite these points we have to say getting the Home Hub 5 up and running is very easy and even technophobes shouldn’t worry. The router’s user interface isn’t the most advanced we’ve seen and won’t give Linksys’ industry leading ‘Smart WiFi’ sleepless nights, but it is simple to navigate. BT also deserves credit for shipping the Home Hub 5 with a long 2m power cable, which gives a lot of flexibility when it comes to positioning the router. Linksys and Asus are leading the way here with routers that have no password but make you pick one in the setup wizard. That makes far more sense to us, though BT’s approach is consistent with previous Home Hub’s.

In most cases this is usually because the manufacturer has discontinued the product. We don’t want you to miss out though so here’s some of our best selling products which are similar to what you are looking for. Just a small point to note - they might not have the exact features as the product you initially wanted so please be sure to check the features before you buy. We’ve come to expect the worst when testing ISP-supplied routers, but BT’s Home Hub 5 bucks the trend in a big way by embracing the latest in wireless tech.

After 29 January 2011, BT Broadband Talk was no longer provided as part of BT's broadband packages. There are two versions of the BT Home Hub 3, the A and the B model. The hardware contained within the Home Hub 3A was manufactured by Siemens' Gigaset division and is based on a Lantiq XWAYTM ARX168 chipset supporting ADSL2+.

In our 802.11n distance testing, the BT Home Hub 5 achieved speeds 28% faster, although compared with rivals, its performance was middling. The BT Home Hub 3 and 4 do not work with the BT Broadband Talk service or DECT telephones. The BT Hub Phone is an optional handset that can be bought to work in conjunction with the BT Home Hub 1, 1.5, and 2.0.
